OTTAWA—Liberal MP Seamus O’Regan announced he has entered a wellness program in order to lead an “alcohol-free lifestyle” after consultation with his family.
“I will return to my duties as the Member of Parliament for St. John’s South—Mount Pearl prior to Parliament resuming in January,” O’Regan said in part on Twitter Sunday afternoon. “I will have more to say on this subject later. In the meantime, my family and I ask for privacy.”
O’Regan was elected to represent the Newfoundland and Labrador riding in October’s federal election. He replaced NDP incumbent Ryan Cleary.
Family members and supporters took to Twitter in response to O’Regan’s announcement.
“So proud of my husband,” Steve Doussis, O’Regan’s husband, said. “I love this man so much!!”
“Very proud of @SeamusORegan for making a change to represent us as his best possible self,” Mark Critch, who stars on the CBC show This Hour Has 22 Minutes, tweeted.
O’Regan is a former journalist and hosted CTV’s Canada AM for almost a decade.
Prior to his career in journalism, he was a senior policy adviser to then Newfoundland premier Brian Tobin.
O’Regan was also an ambassador for Bell Let’s Talk, a campaign aimed at removing the stigma of mental illness.
He has also served as executive vice-president for communications at the Stronach Group, a racetrack operator, and a media innovator in residence at Toronto’s Ryerson University.
