I Just Got a Filling, and My Teeth Are Suddenly Sensitive! What Should I Do?

Let’s face it: getting a filling isn’t a fun time. While it can certainly help our overall oral health, it’s just one of those things that’s so much better once it’s finished.

But what happens if you leave the dentist’s office after a filling and notice your teeth suddenly feel sensitive? Is this normal? Should you be worried? Are there ways to ease the sensitivity?

Read on for the answers to all these questions!

Why are your teeth sensitive after a filling?

There are a few common reasons your teeth may be painful after a filling. The obvious is that your tooth was just worked on by a dental professional who had to drill into it to remove all the decay — you don’t just get a filling without the cavity, of course! According to Christine Frank, DDS, the procedure “inflames the pulp, which is the connective tissue that forms the center of your teeth, causing pulpitis.”

The procedure could have also slightly changed your bite, which can cause tooth sensitivity (and you may need to go back to your dentist to get your filling reshaped). Other reasons your teeth may be sensitive after a filling are a possible allergic reaction (this is rare) or the cavity went so deep into the pulp of the tooth that the tissue is no longer healthy, and a root canal may be required.

What can you do about tooth sensitivity after a filling? Now that you know what the cause of the sensitivity may be, you need to know what you can do to help the pain go away — fast!

While the pain will likely go away entirely in two to four weeks on its own (and if it doesn’t you should immediately consult with your dentist), Frank says you can also try any of the following remedies to alleviate some of the problem: take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory, avoid sweet foods and drinks, and limit your consumption of extremely hot or cold drinks.

Dealing with tooth sensitivity in general

While dental fillings can cause short-term sensitivity, many people deal with sensitivity to hot and cold food and drinks on the daily. The good news? This kind of tooth sensitivity can be treated! Brushing twice a day with Sensodyne Rapid Relief toothpaste can bring significant relief from sensitivity in as little as three days, which means you can go back to enjoying the foods you love (hello, ice cream!) without having to give it a second thought.

What are the best foods for weight loss?

Research by scientists has revealed that some foods may have an impact on appetite. These could be beneficial for weight loss when incorporated into a healthful diet and lifestyle. Read on to learn more about seven foods that may be helpful for weight loss. People should buy nutrient-dense foods if they are trying to lose weight. Foods that provide protein and fiber could be especially helpful for weight management.
One study found that some foods — including fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, and yogurt — were connected with weight loss.
In the same study, potato chips, sugary beverages, red meats, and processed meats were associated with weight gain.
Based on these findings, it may be best to limit fried foods, foods with added sugar, high-fat meats, and processed foods when trying to shift the pounds.
Though the right foods may help, physical activity is essential for losing weight and keeping the pounds off. It is important to check with a doctor before starting any physical activity program.

1. Eggs

bowl of oatmeal with nuts and fruit
Foods that provide both protein and fiber may help with weight loss.
Eggs are a popular food, particularly for breakfasts, that may help promote weight loss.

In a small study of 21 men, researchers compared the effects of eating eggs or eating a bagel for breakfast on food intake, hunger, and satisfaction.

They also looked at levels of blood sugar, insulin, and ghrelin, which is also known as the hunger hormone.
They found that men who had eaten the egg breakfast ate significantly less at their next meal, and in the following 24 hours, than those who had eaten the bagel breakfast.

Those who had eaten the eggs also reported feeling less hungry and more satisfied 3 hours after breakfast than those who had eaten the bagel.
After breakfast, the egg group also had less of a change in their blood sugar and insulin levels, as well as lower ghrelin levels than the bagel group.

2. Oatmeal
Starting the day with a bowl of oatmeal could also result in a lower number on the scales.
A study involving 47 adults looked at differences in appetite, fullness, and next meal intake after participants ate oatmeal, as opposed to an oat-based ready-to-eat breakfast cereal.

After eating oatmeal, participants felt significantly fuller and less hungry than after eating the cereal. Also, their calorie intake at lunch was lower after eating oatmeal than after eating breakfast cereal.
While both breakfasts contained the same amount of calories, the oatmeal provided more protein, more fiber, and less sugar than the cereal.
The authors concluded that the difference in fiber, specifically a type of soluble fiber called beta-glucan, was probably responsible for the results.

3. Beans, chickpeas, lentils, and peas
As a group, beans, chickpeas, lentils, and peas are known as pulses. They may influence weight loss due to their effect on fullness, as well as their protein and fiber content.
Similarly to oatmeal, pulses contain soluble fiber that may slow down digestion and absorption. Eating protein leads to the release of hormones that signal fullness.
Researchers analyzed studies that had looked at the effect of the consumption of pulses on weight loss.
Weight loss diets that included pulses resulted in significantly greater weight loss than those that did not. Weight maintenance diets that included pulses also resulted in weight loss compared with those that did not.

4. Nuts
A study involving overweight and obese women compared a weight loss diet supplemented with 50 grams (g) of almonds a day with a weight loss diet that did not include nuts. After 3 months, women in the almond group lost significantly more weight than women in the nut-free group.
Women in the almond group also had much greater reductions in their waist size, body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar.
Nuts contain protein and fiber, which may help explain their influence on body weight. They also contain heart-healthy fats and other beneficial nutrients. While nuts can be included as part of a healthful diet, moderation is still essential since they are an energy-dense food.
Weight regain is often a concern for individuals after they have lost weight.
In a large study in Europe, researchers found that people who consumed the most nuts gained less weight during a 5-year period than people who did not eat nuts. They also had less risk of becoming overweight or obese.

5. Avocados
Avocados are a fruit that provides fiber and beneficial fats, as well as many other nutrients. They may also help promote weight management.
A study of American adults found that people who consumed avocado weighed significantly less and had a lower BMI than those who did not. People who ate avocado tended to eat more fruits, vegetables, and fiber than people who did not, as well.
The people who ate avocado had an overall healthier diet and consumed significantly less added sugar than those who did not. Similarly, their risk for metabolic syndrome was lower than for those who did not consume avocado.

6. Berries
Fiber has been linked with weight management, and berries tend to be some of the highest-fiber fruits.
One cup of raspberries or blackberries provides 8 g of fiber. Berries can be added to many foods, such as oatmeal, yogurt, or salads.

7. Cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts also contain fiber that may be helpful for weight loss.
One cup of cooked Brussels sprouts provides 6 g of fiber, which is 24 percent of the daily value for fiber.

5 superfood for glowing skin

So, the skincare industry is one of the wealthiest industries, with billions pumped in every second.

And while there are many products that can boost your skin and make it glow and radiant, one cannot deny the magic of natural food products. Although a balanced lifestyle, healthy food choices, proper exercises can help you to achieve that much needed body-mind-soul balance, adding these superfoods in your daily diet can help you achieve a glowing radiant skin.

1. Berries: Deep coloured berries such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries are loaded with antioxidants and can help you to fight off blemishes. The antioxidants can help your skin to fight premature skin ageing and acnes. So the next time you are making that salad add these berries and see the result.

2. Spinach: While Popeye bulked up eating a can of spinach, how about getting a radiant glowing skin by consuming some spinach? Loaded with antioxidants, spinach can help reduce the onset of wrinkles along with strengthening the skin tissues, spinach also possesses anti-inflammatory properties which flush out toxins, giving clear, glowing skin.

3. Tomatoes: Be it tomatoes or tomato based items, it can help you to clear up your acne problems. Tomato is rich in an antioxidant called lycopene which has anti-ageing properties and also acts a sunscreen from within. These antioxidants from tomatoes can also help in combating free radicals that is produced due to excessive sun exposure. Your skin needs a boost from within to look fresh and glowing.. Since tomato is acidic in nature, its pulp helps tighten pores and prevent pimples.

4. Sea food: Diet that is inclusive of sea food and fish leads to decrease in skin wrinkling. The omega-3 fatty acids found in fish and seafood slow down the wrinkling process. . It also increases levels of acetylcholine, a neutrotransmitter that makes your muscles contract and tighten under the skin, keeping your face looking toned and firm. Furthermore, omega-3 fatty acids which is found in fish and sea food have mood-regulating benefits, which can help with the stress component of having acne.

5. Walnuts: One of the many benefits of having walnuts apart from having a healthy heart is smoother skin, healthy hair, strong bones and healthy hair. It has omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E, which ultimately makes way for a glowing and supple skin.

An Esthetician’s Best Anti-Aging Secret for Racegoers

After spending my life in the saddle but not looking like it, and also working as a professional in skin care, people constantly ask me for the secret to youthful, healthy skin. The answer is simple – wear SPF daily!

No matter which side of the fence that you enjoy racing from, be it as a professional horseman or a fan, it is of vital importance to wear sunblock every day, year-round. Yes, year-round! This is your No. 1 anti-aging secret that will not only save your face, but it can also save your life.

My best suggestion is to wear a chemical-free SPF of 25 or higher. Sunblock and physical block are the same thing. These are chemical-free formulas that protect your skin without the addition of potentially harmful chemicals such as oxybenzone and octinoxate, the main ingredients in sunscreen.

Oxybenzone acts like an estrogen in the body, alters sperm in test animals and is associated with endometriosis in women. Octinoxate consistently shows hormone-like activity under testing. The FDA is currently taking another look at these ingredients, but in the meantime it is best to stick to a natural sunblock. For day-to-day wear, apply just enough to cover your face and neck.

Ladies, here’s a tip: a chemical-free sunblock is the perfect primer for foundation! Bonus for all sexes – the zinc will help to calm sensitive skin and helps to keep skin blemish-free. For water and high exposure activities, it’s best to reapply every two to three hours and just after swimming.

Why the worry? Skin cancer is consistently listed in the top five cancer KILLERS. Melanomas on the scalp and neck only annually make up 6% of all melanomas, but they cause 10% of all melanoma deaths! Cancer causing rays from the sun do penetrate windows. Light bulbs (yes, even the energy saving ones) emit UVA and UVC! That means, if you only go back and forth to your office, you should apply just enough SPF to cover your face prior to heading out. There are UVA/UVB/UVC rays even on cloudy days; up to 80 percent of the sun’s rays penetrate clouds! Remember, if it only takes approximately 15 minutes of sun exposure to absorb and synthesize enough Vitamin D for the day, skin cancer can also be activated within that short amount of time. If you think “this won’t happen to me,” remember that in the U.S. alone more than two million new skin cancer cases are reported each year.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO APPLY SUNSCREEN, EVEN ON  CLOUDY DAYS

For those who enjoy winter sports, UV radiation exposure increases four to five percent with every 1,000 feet above sea level. Even when walking around town, snow reflects and intensifies sunlight! So you see, you don’t have to be up on the slopes to be at risk. Daily activities yield plenty of exposure. Great ways to protect yourself include not only wearing SPF on your face and neck but also wearing hats with brims, gloves and long sleeves.

Everyone should go for an annual professional mole check, because skin cancers can grow anywhere on your body including on your scalp and your feet. If anyone in your family has ever had any form of skin cancer, you should actually go once every three to six months. Your physician will advise you on the necessary frequency due to your family health history.
I always suggest seeing a dermatologist who specializes in moles to avoid having unnecessary mole removal procedures. Also, any time you are having a mole removed on your face, it is best to ask your mole specialist for a plastic surgeon referral to avoid unsightly scarring.

Cancer isn’t the only issue; unprotected skin will develop premature wrinkles and brown spots that just make you look old! In some, unprotected sun exposure also seems to accelerate the growth of skin tags. YIKES! Darker-skinned people need to protect their skin just as much as anyone else, especially to avoid skin tag accumulation over time.

We all hate wrinkles, so how cool is this? Wearing sunblock can help to slow your aging process by up to 24 percent! (Woohoo!) Those that suffer from rosacea and flushing can also reap the benefit of the calming properties of zinc through their sunblock. As mentioned, chemical-free sunblock is the perfect makeup primer.

With all of the health and beauty benefits, no bad side effects and the fact that it only takes seconds to apply, you’re out of excuses. Please pick up a bottle of chemical-free SPF, rated 25 or higher, today and be as vibrant on the outside as you feel on the inside.
SUNSCREEN CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE AND
KEEP SKIN HEALTHY AND BEAUTIFUL

Le Visage remodels Worth Avenue boutique

By Aleese Kopf
Daily News Staff Writer
The staff at Le Visage Swiss Heritage skin-care salon promise they can make their clients look younger within minutes.
Don’t believe them? They’ll prove it.
“People don’t believe that they’re going to see instant results,” said Ben Pinto, co-owner of the boutique. “So they come in and we show them, and they’re shocked.”
Added Idan Gal, co-owner: “We show them the difference on the spot. So, we do one side compared to the other so they actually see a difference. We’re not just talking and promising.”
Pinto, Gal and third owner Jacob Ninio recently remodeled their Swiss-inspired salon in the Esplanade at 150 Worth Ave. and re-opened last month. It’s their second year on Worth Avenue. According to the owners, they use non-invasive treatments with collagen, amino acids, oxygen, vitamin C and other natural nutrients to revitalize skin and reverse aging signs.
Spray vitamins
New products this year include a oxygen machine and bee venom syringes. During an oxygen-infusion treatment, oxygen infused with vitamins and essential nutrients is sprayed directly into pores, boosting skin firmness and radiance.
“It’s better for the skin than any cream, because the oxygen pushes the good ingredients we have into the skin,” Gal said.
“The results will be instant with the machine,” Ninio said. “That’s why we’re using it.”
Ninio said the most popular product at the salon is a syringe of bee venom.
For $695, customers can apply the yellowish serum to wrinkles on the forehead or around the mouth and watch their skin change within a minute. Staff will demonstrate how it works for skeptics.
“It’s purified bee venom that plumps up the skin without irritation,” Pinto said. “Basically it manipulates your skin to make you think you got stung.”
The venom lasts for six to 10 hours.
Clients want instant changes
Ninio said the product is part of an industry trend of clients wanting results faster.
“What’s happened is everybody wants instant results,” he said. “They want to see a change now.”
Gal said the bee venom is popular among woman who have a gala or charity event the same day and need a “quick fix.”
The staff at Le Visage focus on customer experience, too. They offer clients champagne, coffee and chocolate as they walk through the doors. French Bulldog Lola also is first in line to greet customers.
Pinto said Le Visage is unique because of the product education and personal touch. He said beauty advisers and estheticians teach clients how to enhance their skin naturally without a needle or knife.
The team is willing to close the doors for a few hours for clients who want a private treatment.
“We try to keep it very exclusive and very personal,” he said. “I love the one-on-one interaction with the customers … learning about them and who they are.”
Pinto said they’re also beginning to host private events at the salon. And, soon they’ll be partnering with a doctor to start offering once weekly BOTOX parties.
“We listen to the ladies and what they want and try to bring it,” he said.
Ninio said make-up re-touches is another new service in the works.
“No one wants to walk down the street without makeup after a facial,” he said. “We’ll do makeup touch ups here to prepare them. They can come by for a facial for an event that night, we’ll do the makeup after, and then they can go out.”

Ettenio - Your Answer To Fabulous Skin And Hair

After being on the market for three years, Ettenio has rebranded to make women love their mane again.

In October 2012, Ettenio launched nine hair-care products. Antoinette Palmer-Davis told Flair that this was after she decided to grow out her pixie cut to prove to her sons that it could actually grow. After doing her research, she made her own products and then decided to share them with other women after they worked so well for her.

She tells Flair that Ettenio started in her kitchen.

Since then, Palmer-Davis has expanded to over 20 products in her line and has also developed a skin-care line. This was no easy feat, but she was determined to let women feel as beautiful as they should.

"Nothing is better than hearing a woman say that she tried Ettenio and it worked - how it gave them back their confidence because it assisted in their hair growth," she told Flair.

This is why she listens to her customers, who tell her what they want. She has used their input to improve on the products that she has and to acquire the new ones in her line.

But she admits that it is time for her to open the market, especially with her recently launched skin-care products just finding their way on to the market. These were first launched in Cuba and then locally in November 2015.

Palmer-Davis explained that while she liked the old look, it had a more Afrocentric Caribbean feel to it. Though she uses natural ingredients in her product,s she does not want the misconception that the line is a natural hai- care line because she has processed hair. So to appeal to a wider market, she wanted to go for a sleeker global look that would appeal to everyone - women of colour with both natural and processed hair, Hispanics, and Caucasian etc - all hair types.

The skin-care lines also have something for all skin types. They are broken down into two categories: normal to dry skin, and combination (oily and dry) to oily skin. These lines include scrubs, body butters, and oils, daily cleansers, and toners, among other products. Collectively there are over 14 products in the skin-care line.

Ettenio is available in stores across the island with a distributor in Maryland and Cayman Islands. Palmer-Davis is hoping to be fully integrated in the island and the wider Caribbean in 2016 as her focus is to infiltrate the market and reach as many local and international distributors as possible.

But it doesn't end there. Palmer-Davis is currently working on a line of products for men. She is the only female in her household and this gives her a backstage view of what their daily skin-care needs are.

Facial Tips: Is it Really Beneficial & How Often Should You Get Them

Most people, men and women, start paying attention to their skin and hair only when it comes to attending a special occasion such as weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, reunions and other parties. I think women especially go out of their way in their beauty regime to look their best, addressing every little beauty issue to be able to flaunt aflawless skin. But, what happens to our skin for the rest of the year? Most often, due to lack of time, we tend to ignore the basic skin care practises and think it is alright to do so.

When it comes to the basics of skin care, some people are apprehensive in getting a facial done. What are the benefits and what should one look out for? When should one get a facial done? These are some questions which trouble many a mind. But in today’s time, with pollution and stress levels hitting the roof, it often results in lack-lustre skin and itsdegeneration. This is why it is all the more important to pay attention to your skin and take care of it.

Facials should not be treated as something you do once in a while or during special occasions. They should be a regular part of your beauty regime. Yes, it is true that what you need in your twenties is nowhere near what you may need in your forties or fifties; nevertheless a facial is important at both ages.

What is a Basic Facial?

A basic facial should consist of cleaning, toning and moisturising. This is done with cleansers, gels and face washes. It is followed by moisturising the skin according to your skin and age type, and finishing off with a clarifying mask.

As you get older the skin tends to look tired and sluggish. Therefore, to avoid this, exfoliators and dermabrasive creams are used. High protein and vitamin emusifiers are also used with exfoliates and tightening masks that help improve elasticity and give the skin a youthful appearance.

Most people in their twenties should follow a daily skin care routine and a visit to the skin clinic once every 40days for a cleaning and moisturisng program. If you are in your 30’s or 40’s, once a month visit is a must, provided your skin care discipline at home is carefully worked out.

A good massage is vitally essential to improve blood circulation and nourish the skin. See to it that blackheads and whiteheads are cleaned out. Exfoliation should be done with grains that are suitable to your skin type and scrub very gently. You should ensure that professionals through whom you get your facial done should not use harsh strokes on the skin. When it comes to applying masks, I have very often noticed that professionals who have been trained for years fail to get it right. Firstly, the mask should cover wrinkle prone areas of the skin like the neck, forehead and the eye area. Secondly, the mask should always be removed in upward strokes after wetting it.

If you are in your late 40’s or 50’s, the skin therapist’s appointment should be considered as important as a doctor’s appointment. You cannot afford to be laid back on this one especially in a time where toxins and pollutants are daily enemies of the body and skin and do more damage than can be possibly seen by the human eye. Regular facials are a must and remember that if you have an important occasion to attend, the actual impact of the facial will happen atleast two days after you have done it.

For those who are considering the quickies like botox and fillers for that perfect look, my take on this is that they definitely have a tremendous impact on the skin and make you look super. However, as the injectables are used repeatedly the skin tends to age faster and starts giving the skin a haggard look. I have seen many people’s face change and age much sooner than it would have if they had gone for natural treatments.

Few Tips on How to Make the Most of Facials

1. Let your skin breathe after a facial treatment.

2. Never start to apply make-up after a facial. Your pores have just been cleaned and require oxygen, so do not clog them.

3. Try and take a nap after a facial and avoid rushing back to work or taking up stressful activities. The facial tissues have been relaxed so let them be that way for sometime.

4. Try and drink some green tea or warm lime water and honey as the pressure points have been activated on the skin. They will help improve metabolism, relax the body as well as detoxify it.

5. Avoid having a bath with too cold or too hot water. Luke warm water bath is recommended after a facial.

6. Never visit a crowded or high pollution area after your skin pampering.

7. Above all be kind to yourself, you deserve it.

Fight back against winter’s war on your skin with at-home remedies, masks

WASHINGTON — If winter weather is waging war on your skin, it’s time to fight back — and you don’t need to leave the house to do so.
Ludmila Toppi, master aesthetician at Lorien Spa in Alexandria, Virginia, has some homemade remedies that replenish, protect and moisturize your skin from winter’s whipping winds and frigid temps. And best of all, they’re made from simple, everyday ingredients.
Toppi has been making skin care products at home for as long as she can remember. She says her mother, who was raised in Russia’s countryside, rarely had access to pharmacies, skin care stores or spas.
“What they had was basically whatever was growing in the woods,” Toppi says. “So for me, this is something that I continuously keep doing.”
In addition to convenience, Toppi says making your own masks and moisturizers is fun and it’s much more cost-effective than getting frequent facials. (Although she does encourage you to come visit her at least once this season for some pampering.)
So roll up your sleeves and dig through your cabinets: Here are Toppi’s favorite at-home facial mask recipes that will help your skin glowing all winter long.
The avocado mask
“When I was growing up, back in the Soviet Union, I never saw an avocado in my life. When I came here and I tasted it, I fell in love with avocado,” Toppi says.
And when she learned that avocados are packed with vitamins, healthy fats and antioxidants, she decided to put the fruit on her skin, as well as her dinner plate.
“Avocado is fantastic for replenishing the vitamins that the skin needs in the winter.”
For her avocado mask, Toppi mashes half of an avocado — “I would recommend eating the other half,” she says — and mixes it with about a teaspoon of lemon juice, which she says helps to brighten the skin.
She also adds a few drizzles of honey before applying the mixture directly to her face using her fingers or a makeup brush.
Toppi says to leave the mask on for about 15 to 30 minutes (when you start to notice it drying up, it’s time to take it off), then rinse it off with warm water and enjoy the fresh glow.
“Avocado is suitable for all skin types, and especially for dry and dehydrated skin, which I see a lot of in winter months because of the wind and the improper heating systems that we have, which are very drying. So the avocado is like the lifesaver for winter,” she says.
The pumpkin mask
Making a pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread for the season? Set aside a few spoonfuls of freshly cooked or canned pumpkin to make your skin as irresistible as the smells escaping your oven.
Toppi says pumpkin is full of vitamins A and C, as well as zinc and enzymes, which help to boost the skin’s healthy appearance. “These enzymes also neutralize free radicals and they prevent skin damage,” she says.
In a small bowl, mix the pumpkin with a little olive oil and an egg yolk, then apply the mixture to your skin and leave on for about 10 to 15 minutes.
“Basically I never do any special shopping for this mask because you can pretty much find the ingredients in your home, in any kitchen,” Toppi says.
When it’s time to remove the mask, rinse the ingredients off with warm water.
“You will see that it’s just fantastic,” she says about the moisturizing mask.
The oatmeal honey mask
If you need to exfoliate, Toppi says you need oatmeal. This recipe is her go-to when her skin needs a little soothing and a little scrubbing.
First, cook up some oatmeal — but not for as long as you would if you were going to eat it. You don’t want the oatmeal to be mushy; you want its texture to contain a bit of roughness, she says.
If it’s instant oatmeal (make sure there are no added flavorings, sugars or artificial additives), Toppi suggests cooking it for just a minute or so.
Then, add in a few drizzles of honey to help bind the oatmeal.
“Honey is actually antibacterial and hydrating,” Toppi says.
For some extra moisture, add a spoonful or two of plain yogurt (again, make sure there are no flavorings, sugars or artificial additives).
Apply the mask to your skin, and after about 15 minutes (or when you feel it start to dry), rinse it off with warm water.

5 Types Of Laser Skin Treatments And Their Benefits

Skin is the largest and the most visible part of our body. Performing many functions, starting from sense to protection, it suffers all the environmental chaos, the use of harsh products and many other external and internal torments. Any problem, in whichever part of the body, will affect the skin for sure. Age is another factor that affects the skin.

Whatever may be the reason or the problem, skin shows it all, especially on the face. Skin conditions include blemishes, acne, wrinkles etc. The list is never ending. Ageing brings dark circles, sagging skin, wrinkles etc. Anti- aging products, medications, etc. all promise to redress these skin problems. But most of these promises remain unfulfilled! That is when people turn to laser treatments!

What Is Laser Treatment For Skin?

Lasers are sources of high intensity light. It accurately focuses on small spots with high energy.
The laser beam can gently vaporize and/or ablate the skin tissues to treat wrinkles, scars and blemishes, seal blood vessels or cut skin tissue. Broad spectrum of the Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) has the ability to specifically treat blood vessels and pigmentation. The technique directs short, concentrated pulsating beams of light at irregular skin, precisely removing the skin layer by layer.

  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Smokers’ line
  • Vascular lesions
  • Skin tightening
With the new improved and advancing technologies, many other skin problems and diseases too can be treated using Laser therapy.

Types Of Lasers:

There are several types of lasers used in skin laser therapy. The wavelength peaks of the laser light, pulse durations and how the target skin tissue absorbs this, determine the clinical applications of the laser types. The broad two categories are:

Ablative Lasers:

In this procedure, an intense wavelength of light is ejected into the skin, which removes the outer layers of aged or sun damaged skin. Laser stimulates the underlying skin, resulting in collagen formation and an improvement in wrinkles. After laser resurfacing, an ointment and dressing is applied to the skin. Once the skin heals after the treatment, new skin forms that is smoother and tighter. Ablative Lasers are of two types:

1. Carbon Dioxide Laser (Co2):

It was first introduced during the late ’60s and is still being used for skin rejuvenation. Due to its side effects, it has largely been replaced with fractional mode lasers, which has fewer side effects and heals faster. It is not apt for darker skin tones.
Skin Conditions: It is used in case of skin cancer, acne scars, deep set wrinkles, birthmarks, other scarring warts, moles, skin tags, saggy skin (encourages collagen production for skin tightening), corns on feet, and sun damage.
Side Effects: It takes long time to heal huge risks of pigmentation, pain, itching and burning sensation, skin redness and scarring.

2. Erbium Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (Er:YAG):

It helps remove surface-level and moderately deep lines and wrinkles on the face, hands, neck or chest with minimal burning of surrounding tissues. With lesser side effects, it heals faster than CO2 Laser treatment.
Skin Conditions: It is used to cure pigmentation problems, acne scars, sun damage, fine lines, small to moderate wrinkles, and moles.
Side Effects: It may cause redness, swelling, and bruising, which may last for 1-2 weeks.

Non-Ablative Laser:

Unlike ablative technologies that heat and remove the top skin tissue, non-ablative (or non-wounding) laser work beneath the surface skin layer. It stimulates collagen growth and tightens the underlying skin to improve the skin tone. It also removes fine lines and mild to moderate skin damage.
Non-Ablative Laser-based treatments are of the following types:

3. Pulsed Dye Laser:

It treats the skin by targeting the blood vessels directly to shrink them, making the skin less red. It feels like a rubber band snap, and can be used anywhere on the face and body. It needs around 3 to 5 sessions of treatment. Results are permanent. The time taken for healing is just a couple of hours, during which the pinkness and the redness subsides.
Skin Conditions: It is used to treat spider veins, birthmarks, rosacea, broken capillaries, stretch marks, vascular lesions, and fine lines around the eyes.
Side Effects: Temporary pigmentation and a little bruising are normally reported.

4. Nd: Yag Laser:

Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet is a crystal that is used as a laser medium for solid-state lasers. These emit a wavelength of high energy light, which when focused on a certain skin condition, creates heat and destroys the diseased cells.
Skin Conditions: It is helpful in treating vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, skin pigmentation problems, spider veins, tattoo removal and hair removal.
Side Effects: It has a low success rate. In case of vascular lesions, there is a high chance of recurrence. There can be pain during the treatment. Redness, swelling and itching may last up to several days after the treatment.

5. Alexandrite Laser:

This laser emits wavelength of high energy light that is converted to heat energy. This damages the specific target area. This laser uses the process of photothermolysis, which means using light (photo) to heat (thermo) a selected area for destruction (lysis). Alexandrite lasers cause very precise tissue destruction of the lesion and leave tissue in the surrounding area undamaged.
Skin Conditions: It is used to treat brown spots due to sun damage, birthmarks, pigmentations, and pigmented lesions. It is useful for hair removal, tattoo removal and leg veins.
Side Effects: Pain during treatment is common. Redness, swelling and itching may last for a few days. It may also cause changes in pigmentation.

Light-Based Treatments:

The light-based treatments are also used to cure skin problems. Though they are not exactly laser treatments, but are similar to it in terms of purpose, procedures and results.
Some of the Light based treatments are:
  • Intensed Pulsed Light
  • Pearl by Cutera
  • Photo Facial
  • Portrait
  • Pulsed Dye Lasers
  • Radiofrequency
  • Ultrasound Imaging

Results And Recovery:

The results of laser and light-based treatments vary, depending on the technology and treatment. When properly performed, laser and light-based treatments can visibly improve the skin conditions and problems. And they also rejuvenate the skin.
Recovery too, varies, depending on the type of procedure employed. Mild treatments, such as those with low-powered lasers typically have very fast recovery times, generally a few days to one week. This type of treatment does not result in heavy peeling, oozing or crusting of the skin. Aggressive laser treatments require a longer recovery period. Typically, the skin will go through various stages of redness, oozing, crusting and peeling for one week. After that, the skin may remain pink for up to another two weeks.

Is It Safe?

Laser is a surgical procedure and all surgical procedures carry some risk. Ablative laser and light-based treatments can result in infections, cold sores, milia (small white elevated cysts of superficial skin), darkening of the skin (particularly if exposed to the sun after surgery) or cysts.
Non-ablative techniques can cause temporary hyper pigmentation (skin darkening), blisters, and damage to the eyes from laser exposure.
With advancing technology, there are new types of lasers being introduced for various skin problems and skin types. And with so many different types of laser skin treatments available, it is difficult to zero in on the one that will work for you. So it is very important to consult an experienced dermatologist to finalize the treatment plan, tailor-made for you!

10 Symptoms & Treatments For Dry Skin Allergies

A supple, glowing and perfect skin is something we all desire, especially today’s youth. But due to various reasons, perfect skin remains just a dream for many. Skin is broadly of 3 types – normal, dry and oily. The combinations of the 3 also exist. With increased exposure to varied harmful factors, our skin tends to respond vigorously and take up the extremes of dry or oily skin type.

What Is Dry Skin?

Dry skin, in the extreme conditions is known as Xerodermatitis and Xerosis, which is a common skin condition. It mainly occurs due to lack of sufficient moisture or oils in the epidermis, the uppermost layer of the skin. This results in dry patches and small fine flakes on the skin.

Causes:

Dry Skin is caused by both external and internal factors. External factors like- low humidity, cold temperatures, hot showers, over usage of harsh soaps and sanitizers can make the skin dry. While internal factors, such as age, genetics, and personal and family history of skin ailments like allergies, asthma, dermatitis also causes skin dryness. People suffering from thyroid disorders are also prone to dry skin.

Underlying Conditions:

The skin consists of 3 layers – Epidermis (outermost), dermis (middle) and hypodermis (innermost). Epidermis, the protective layer is composed of protein and lipid (fat). Lipid helps to keep the skin hydrated. When the skin loses the fatty oils it easily loses moisture and protection. This renders the skin dry, making the skin more sensitive to rashes and other problems (Xerosis).
Eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, hives, etc., are the severe cases of DRY SKIN PROBLEMS

Dry Skin Allergy Symptoms:

Here are some symptoms of dry skin:

1. Rough Flaky Skin And Gray, Ashy Skin In People With Dark Complexion:

Dry skin, as said before, lacks natural fatty oils and moisture. This makes the skin rough, flaky, scaly and at times, hardened. Dandruff is one of the common ailments, which results from dry skin on the scalp. Dry skin flakes usually turns pale, peel off and shed on their own.

2. Itching:

Itching can aggravate the severity of dry skin. It can lead to an “itch-scratch” cycle. This cycle is more when the person is not much conscious, like when he/she is engrossed in some important work, or during sleep etc.

3. Red Patches:

The rough, raised patches of flaky skin can itch, which cause a severe burning sensation. This burning sensation makes the skin red and cause red patches.

4. Cracks In The Skin, Which May Bleed:

Many times, dry skin tends to crack, especially during winters. These cracks become a budding ground for microbes. These microbes cause infection in the cracks, causing it to itch, burn and bleed. This can lead to serious skin infections, which can spread to other parts of the skin as well.

5. Chapped Or Cracked Lips, Palms, And Heels:

Chapped lips are the first symptom of the lack of water and moisture in the body. It can also be a sign of some kind of dysfunction in the body. Same is with cracked palms and heels. Though these are very common symptoms and occur mainly during winters, see a doctor in severe cases.

Dry Skin Allergy Treatments:

There are different treatments for dry skin depending on the condition and severity of the problem. Treatments can be both external and internal. Few treatments are:

1. Moisturizing:

Moisturizing is an external treatment. It involves frequent application of moisturizers on the problem skin area. Applying moisturizer on damp skin is more effective. In case of extreme dry skin, moisturizers containing urea or lactic acid are useful. These ingredients help the skin in holding and retaining the water and keeping the skin well hydrated. It is effective in not so very severe cases. Some of the moisturizers are – Vaseline, Aquaphor, Cetaphil lotion, Lubriderm Lotion, Crisco Vegetable Shortening etc. Topical steroid creams like hydrocortisone 1% cream, Pramosone 2.5% cream, Triamcinolone 0.1% cream, Clobetasol 0.05% cream may also be prescribed.

2. Medicines:

If the condition of the skin gets worse, consulting a dermatologist is the best way forward. Thedosage of the medicines depends on the severity of the case. If the condition is getting very severe, steroids may also be prescribed. Some of the oral medications are: Hydroxyzine (Atarax), Diphenhydramine (Benadryl), Cetirizine (Zyrtec), Loratidine (Claritin).

3. Change In Lifestyle:

This the most important factor in case of skin ailments. Most of the severe dry skin problems like eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, etc., can be directly linked to unbalanced, unhealthy or stressful lifestyle. A person has to maintain healthy habits to avoid such kinds of ailments. One should avoid doing all such things which can trigger the problem or increase it. Like, if a person is allergic to some kind of environment or food which causes dry skin, he/she should avoid it. If pollution or cold is the reason, then one should keep the skin covered when going out.

4. Humidify During Winter:

Dry skin, as mentioned before, occurs due to lack of moisture. Humidifying the air to keep it moist is a good way to protect the skin during winter. One can use humidifiers at home and in office as well. They make the dry air moist and lessen the dry skin problems.

5. Applying Cool Cloths And Avoiding Heat:

Heat is an enemy of dry skin as it bereft the skin of its moisture content. Using hot water strips the skin of its natural oils, making it dry. You should replace hot water with warm water to give your skin some respite. One should also avoid frequent and long baths. Five-10 minutes in the bath hydrates the skin, but longer than that, is bad for your skin. Harsh soaps and cleansers should also be avoided.
Dry skin is a common problem and not well attended. If you want to avoid further complications, make sure to take care of your dry skin today. If needed,, make an appointment with a good dermatologist to find a solution.
For the matters of dry skin, simple and timely preventive measures work effectively. Avoid using harsh soaps and chemical cleansers. Also avoid frequent and regular applications of bland emollients and moisturizers. Fortunately, dry skin is usually mild and can be easily remedied. So suffer no more in silence, and seek help to get beautiful, flawless skin!
